A feature designed to protect your iPhone’s battery health, here’s when you may prefer to turn off Optimized Battery Charging.

We Always Keep Optimized Battery Charging Turned On, But When Should You Turn it Off on Your iPhone?

Apple has thrown in a lot of measures in place to protect the iPhone’s battery health. With iPhone 15, you can set a charging limit to 80%. This way, your phone spends less time at 100% which means less wear and tear on the battery.

Apart from that, Apple also offers the Optimized Battery Charging feature on iPhone. What it does is pretty straightforward. When your phone hits the 80% mark while charging, the iPhone cuts off power to let things cool down and holds the charge there until it can go all the way to 100%. It even learns from your usage habits until it charges all the way to 100%.

The idea is to give you a fully charged iPhone when you actually need it without damaging the battery.

The thing is, Optimized Battery Charging may not work in your favor every single time. There is a chance you may not get that 100% charged iPhone when you’re on that vacation or work trip. This is important if you have a long day planned ahead of you and every single percentage of battery counts. In that instance, it’s best to turn off this feature until things go back to normal.

You can turn it off by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and turn off the ‘Optimized Battery Charging’ toggle switch, if you have an iPhone 14 or older. Those with an iPhone 15 can go to Settings > Battery > Charging Optimized and select ‘None.’

Once this feature is turned off, your iPhone will now charge all the way to 100% without taking any sort of break in between. The goal here is to charge to 100% so you can have a fully loaded iPhone ready to tackle an entire day.

Do keep one thing in mind, the optimized charging feature exists to safeguard your battery in the long run. When turned off, your iPhone may experience some wear and tear. However, if ambient temperature are within acceptable limits, then it will not harm your iPhone at all. Try taking the case off, you’ll be surprised how much cooler your iPhone stays during the charging period.

In short, if you’re on a vacation or a work trip, it’s best to keep the feature turned off. If you always have access to a charger, it’s best to keep the feature on at all times.
