ChatGPT is coming to the iPhone, iPad, Mac and part of the deal includes Phil Schiller getting an observer role in OpenAI’s board.
Apple Fellow Phil Schiller Will Sit in OpenAI’s Board Meetings as an Observer as Part of Apple’s Deal
Apple’s deal with OpenAI is a rather interesting one. Apple isn’t paying a dime to OpenAI for its ChatGPT integration in the ecosystem. It seems as though Apple is paying the company in exposure, just like photographers at their first ever wedding gig.
No matter how you slice it, it’s a massive deal bringing ChatGPT integration to the iPhone, iPad and Mac as part of Apple Intelligence. And, the deal goes much deeper than software integration, too as Bloomberg is reporting that Apple Fellow Phil Schiller will get a seat on OpenAI’s board as an observer. What this means is he will get to witness what is being discussed in these meetings, he can contribute to them if necessary but he won’t get the right to vote for final decisions.
Interestingly, Microsoft has an observer role in OpenAI’s board, after all, the company has invested a ton of money along with deep integration in Windows and Office. This also means tension can arise between the two companies as they are direct competitors.
However it pans out, so far Phil Schiller hasn’t attended any meeting at OpenAI but will do so by the end of the year.
