Apple is working on the M5 chip and it will find itself inside a new lineup of Macs and iPads, and will power Apple’s AI servers, too.
Apple’s M5 Chip Going into Mass Products in 2025 and Will Also be Used in AI Cloud Servers
Given how things stand, we all know Apple’s M-series chips either go into iPad or the Mac. However, Apple is looking to unify things a little more with the new M5 chip. This means instead of making a new chip that will just power the Mac or iPad, it will have a dual-purpose design, and it will be used to power AI servers.
It makes sense why Apple might be doing this, too.
Apple is looking to utilize TSMC’s System on Integrated Chip technology in order to do this, but a slightly more advanced version of it, because Apple. It is being reported by DigiTimes that the chip will go into mass production in 2025. This means we should see M5-powered Macs and iPads in 2025-2026 and most likely M5-powered servers at the same time. Though Apple won’t likely namedrop the chip that is powering those servers.
This is probably the most insane level of vertical integration I’ve seen in a long time. From the backend server straight to the product in the consumer’s hand, it will be one chip. Do keep one thing in mind though, the source of this news is usually a hit or miss, so take this news with a grain of salt, though it is an absolutely exciting report.
Given how much effort is putting in its chips, it makes sense that it wants to double down and power the backend using its own hardware for the sake of performance and security.
