Latest tvOS 18 Beta 3 for Apple TV Now Available to Download Over the Air
It’s somewhat hilarious that tvOS 18 actually exists. If you look at the features Apple announced for it, it’s a list of things you’ll probably never use, such as InSight, given it’s a TV+ exclusive feature. However, it’s still an important update and part of the Apple ecosystem, so let’s go with it.
Today, beta 3 of tvOS 18 is available for download and you can install it by going to Settings > System > Software Update on your Apple TV. Usually these updates are small and quick. Make sure you install them as they arrive, especially if the Apple TV acts as a HomeKit hub.
While tvOS 18 may not look that important, but its significance goes through the roof if you’re running a HomeKit setup. With iOS 18 and tvOS 18 working together, you can choose which device to use as the preferred HomeKit hub. This feature wasn’t available before and I’m glad it is now. In fact, it leaves me puzzled why something so basic wasn’t part of the HomeKit feature set. Now that it’s here, we just have to wait for it to arrive later this year so we can play around with it.
Apart from tvOS 18, a new set of HomePod updates are also available. You can download them by launching the Home app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Now just go to Home Settings then tap on Software Update and install everything that’s available for your HomePod, if you’re testing out beta software. Else you can just skip this step entirely.
If you want to, you can install tvOS 18 on your Apple TV right away. Follow the tutorial posted here for more details.
