Apple has just approved a PC emulator app on the App Store called UTM SE. It’s available for iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro.
PC Emulator App UTM SE Launches on iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro for Free – Play Your Favorite Retro Games or Run Your Favorite Apps on the Go
Thanks to a few guideline changes, Apple has opened up its App Store to plenty of wonderful stuff, namely emulators. We’ve seen apps like Delta take over the iPhone and iPad instantly, and that momentum continues toady with the release of UTM SE.
The app allows you to run a virtual copy of Windows, Mac OS, Linux or DOS. Once installed, you can then use your retro apps and games on it such as DOOM. Believe it or not, this app does come as a surprise, but a great one.
Once you download the app, free by the way, you get the option to either set everything from scratch, or you can take the pre-built virtual machines for a spin. Right now, the app supports x86, PPC, and RISC-V architectures and it is built using QEMU which is an extremely popular emulation platform. What you should know is this – the app has extremely robust foundations.
The proper course of action to take is setting up a virtual machine from scratch and hope things don’t go sideways. Sure, it may be a long process, but if you’ve always wanted to run Mac OS, Linux or even Windows XP on your iPad for a long, long time, it’s finally your time to shine. But wait, you can even step things up by installing Windows 11, if you want. It’s a virtual machine, after all.
The one thing that truly makes this app stand out is the support for Vision Pro. I did not see that one coming at all. A virtual machine inside a virtual environment is a recipe for fun.
If you want to take the app for a spin, you can download it from the App Store for free right here.
