macOS Sonoma 14.6 was released a while back and it adds support for two external displays on the M3 MacBook Pro.
Apple’s Latest macOS Sonoma Update Adds Support for Multiple External Display on the M3 MacBook Pro when in Clamshell Mode
The M3 MacBook Air has always one-upped the M3 MacBook Pro in one key area – support for two external displays in clamshell mode. With macOS Sonoma 14.6, that difference is now gone as that feature is now available on the M3 MacBook Pro as well. What this means is, you can connect two external displays on your MacBook Pro, close down the lid and keep on working. This wasn’t possible before. Strange, right?
In case you are wondering, this is the base M3 MacBook Pro with 14-inch display, the one with the standard M3 chip, not M3 Pro. The very same MacBook Pro that acts as a bridge between the M3 MacBook Air and the M3 Pro MacBook Pro. I can keep on going but you get the idea which notebook I’m talking about.
From Apple:
This update adds support for using up to two external displays when the laptop lid is closed on 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 chip and also provides important bug fixes and security updates.
I will highly recommend that you go ahead and download macOS Sonoma 14.6 on your Mac right now. Just launch System Settings, then go to General > Software Update. When the update shows up, download it, install it and you’ll be good to go.
Apart from the above mentioned change, the update fixes a few bugs, improves performance and adds a bit of stability in certain corners. In other words, just install it anyway, it’s always a good idea to keep your software up to date no matter what.
