Remember Winamp? It’s now available officially on the iPhone with a handful of modern tweaks and enhancements, of course.
Winamp Music Player Launches Officially on iPhone After Thriving as a Beta for a Long Time
It’s safe to assume Winamp shaped up an entire generation’s love for music. It was the go-to app for playing back our music library, and with time, gained a ton of cool features such as skin support and audio effects.
However, after all these years, the company behind Winamp, Llama Group, hasn’t given up on the software at all. The official Winamp music player is now available to download on the iPhone. And as you’d expect, it is still a music player. It supports playing content back from iCloud or anything that’s stored locally on your iPhone. The app has support for streaming music from Fanzone which does require a subscription.
Apart from that, you do get the option to stream your favorite podcasts, which may or may not interest you, given how many podcast players exist already that get the job done. But hey, you can’t discount nostalgia here at all.
I will add one thing here, the Winamp app doesn’t look anything like what we’ve known from early Windows days. It’s a completely modern take on the software that we’ve known and love.
Honestly, I don’t see the use of such an app in 2024. We have streaming services available that don’t charge a dime, and all you have to bear are a few ads now and then. Making Winamp fit in our everyday life is somewhat of a hassle.
The app does try to woo in users with some customization features, but in the end, you’re still dealing with a music player. How far can you actually go with it, really?
Right off the bat, the most interesting thing about this app is the price – it’s absolutely free. You can download it from here on the App Store. Who knows it might just win you over.
