The famous Apple USB SuperDrive, announced alongside the 2008 MacBook Air is now ‘Sold Out’ and won’t likely return.
Apple’s USB SuperDrive is Completely Sold Out and Might Not Return
It’s no secret that the MacBook Air started an era of extremely thin portable computers. It was so thin, it had to drop the optical drive, an extremely key component in laptops and desktops at the time. Apple had a solution for it, too. That solution was the USB SuperDrive.
It was an external optical drive that connected to your Mac using USB-A and it had the capability to read and write CDs and DVDs.
Apple’s marketing team really went out of its way to flaunt its portability too. Here’s what they had to say about it:
Only slightly bigger than a CD case, the Apple USB SuperDrive slips easily into your travel bag when you hit the road and takes up little space on your desk or tray table when you’re working.
I’m sure no-one is roaming around with a SuperDrive in their travel bag as of late. But, if you are, make sure you drop an email, we need to talk.
When it comes to compatibility, the SuperDrive actually works with all latest Macs. Even with the ones that exclusively ship with a USB-C port. Just use one of the many adapters that convert USB-C to USB-A and you’ll be good to go.
The price Apple was charging for this drive was $79. Not bad at all, I must say.
However, the era of the USB SuperDrive has now come to an end and it is marked as ‘Sold Out’ in several stores around the world. This means we are truly into the ‘cloud’ computing era, where small things like restoring an entire operating system happens over the internet.
If you have a USB SuperDrive with you, it’s best you keep it as memorabilia. It’s an exciting piece of history at this point.
