Both iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will share the same telephoto lens supplier initially.
LG Innotek Will Initially Supply the Telephoto Lens for both iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
Apple is making a big change to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max camera system this year. Instead of giving the larger model the advantage of a 5x telephoto lens, Apple is bringing it to the smaller model, too.
If you were contemplating on buying the Pro Max model due to some telephoto advantage, you’ll be pleased to learn there might not be any this year. Both iPhones will get the 5x telephoto lens and that’s a good thing.
However, getting into the nitty gritty of the supply chain, the initial supplier of these telephoto lenses for both iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro max will be LG Innotek, according to The Elec.
Once Apple has exhausted the initial supply of these lenses, Foxconn and Cowell will be brought in. Apple expects to run out of supply of lenses from LG Innotek in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The way these 5x telephoto lenses works is a work of art. But, to give you a very short explanation of it – the lens reflects lights four times before achieving that 5x optical zoom. When you consider the amount of space there is in something like a smartphone, you start to wonder how amazing this is.
There are a ton of things I am expecting from the iPhone 16 lineup. One of those things is the speedy A18 chip that will handle all our daily tasks. However, it remains to be seen how Apple is going to differentiate the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro in terms of chip specs. Will Apple ship the Pro models with more RAM compared to the standard models?
If you think about it, there is a possibility. According to a recent report, Apple is going to drop the 8GB base RAM from its Mac lineup in favor of 16GB as standard. Could Apple do the same with the iPhone and eventually the iPad down the line?
Fun fact: Apple already does this with the iPad if you buy models with more internal storage. Apple throws in more cores and more RAM for the extra price you pay.
I’m all up for more RAM, if the user can use every single megabyte of it for performance.
