Apple is apparently working on its own Wi-Fi chip and we may see it in iPad as early as 2025.
An Apple-Designed 5G Modem is Definitely Coming to iPhone, But the Company is Also Working on its Own Wi-Fi Chip
Time and time again we have heard rumors about Apple working on its own 5G modem. Turns out, Apple is also working on its own Wi-Fi chip, and it may debut with some iPad model (or two) as early as 2025.
Reported by DigiTimes, who is citing supply chain sources, Apple is readying its own Wi-Fi chip and it may find itself in some iPad models next year. However, there’s a chance we might not see it until the iPhone 18.
But, one thing is clear, Apple’s work on its in-house Wi-Fi chip is currently underway and the success of this adventure means the company will be able to let go of its current supplier Broadcom completely. This will give Apple even more control over its hardware.
It’s very interesting how Apple is slowly and gradually moving away from third-party component suppliers for its devices. We already know its doubling down on chips for the iPhone, iPad and Mac, and reports suggest the company’s own 5G modem might make it to the iPhone as early as next year, but the Wi-Fi chip is a pretty interesting one.
With complete control over how these chips work, Apple will be able to deliver performance and experiences which aren’t possible with current off-the-shelf parts. The transition from Intel to Apple Silicon is a great example of this. A laptop like the MacBook Air turned into a monumental leap overnight, something which was considered ‘too slow’ when on Intel.
With reliance on third-party suppliers completely gone, Apple will be able to deliver products however it sees fit and not wait on technologies to evolve. I’m extremely curious to know how this Wi-Fi chip is going to improve device going forward.
