Own an Apple TV 4K with USB-C? You can Clean Install tvOS 18 Final Using Your Mac
The latest Apple TV models don’t feature any port at all. As updates arrive, you install them and move forward with your life. However, an older Apple TV 4K model features a built-in USB-C port, allowing you to connect your set-top box to a Mac. This also means you can perform a full clean install of tvOS 18 final update if you wanted to.
Today, I’ll show you how you can do just that, but there are a few things you have to make sure before you move forward.
First and foremost, you should check and see where the USB-C port is at the back. See the image below and you’ll know exactly what you are looking for. If you don’t have a USB-C port on your Apple TV, this tutorial is not for you.
Next up, you’ll need a USB-C cable to connect your Apple TV to your Mac. Depending on which Mac you have, you may need a USB-C to USB-C cable or a USB-C to USB-A cable. I’m sure you have plenty lying around, just find one that fits.
Once you have established you have fulfilled the necessary requirements, follow the steps below:
Step 1. Connect your Apple TV to your Mac using a USB-C cable.
Step 2. Launch ‘Finder.’
Step 3. You should see your Apple TV in the list of options on the left. Click on it to open.
Step 4. On the right, you’ll see a button labeled ‘Restore Apple TV.’ Click on it.
Step 5. Just follow the on-screen instructions until Finder starts downloading the firmware file from Apple’s server and restores it on to your Apple TV.
Step 6. Once the restore is complete, you’ll see a pop-up for it on your Mac. Unplug the Apple TV and connect it back to your TV.
Sure, the steps may not be that convenient, but this is the only Apple TV model that allows you to perform a clean installation. Now that you’ve done it, you can enjoy all the features of tvOS 18 in their best-possible form – absolutely fresh.
