It’s confirmed that the iPhone SE 4 will feature an OLED display, which means Apple will no longer sell an iPhone with LCD display.

The LCD iPhone is Being Phased Out Completely as Apple Makes the Switch to OLED with iPhone SE 4

Apple has been selling iPhones with LCD displays for a long time, even when the competition started embracing OLED rapidly. In fact, Apple has been securing up to 200 million LCD panels per year for its iPhones from its long-standing partners Japan Display and Sharp.

The latest report from Nikkei reveals Apple is moving away from those suppliers completely. The company had a lengthy run with Japan Display and Sharp, now it’s time to say goodbye to both as the OLED iPhone SE 4 is right on the horizon. This also means Apple will no longer have any LCD iPhone in its lineup once the new iPhone SE is released.

The iPhone SE 4 is shaping up to be an interesting smartphone from Apple. Usually, we think of the SE as an extremely cheap smartphone compared to the flagship model – that’s right, to a certain degree. However, this time around, Apple is bringing more flagship features to the phone such as OLED display, Face ID, a squared off design like the latest iPhones and a far superior camera system, too.

Speaking of OLED – it’s believed LG Display and BOE Technology Group are going to provide panels for the new iPhone SE. With the phone set to go into mass production in October, I expect it to go on sale in March of 2025, if previous SE releases are anything to go by. However, with Apple Intelligence support on the cards, there is a chance Apple might push for an earlier release so that it can bring its AI features to the masses as quickly as possible.

Usually, Apple’s cheaper iPhones and iPads are repackaged older flagships and the company has a very, very good parts bin to choose components from. That doesn’t mean the iPhone SE 4 is going to be a boring device, it means Apple is going to roll out premium features at a far more affordable price point going forward.

Now, the decision to make is – should you get the iPhone 16 or should you wait for the new iPhone SE 4 and save a ton of money?
