It’s official – Lightning is completely done for. Apple has announced USB-C versions of Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard and Trackpad.
New Magic Keyboard, Mouse and Trackpad with USB-C Now Available to Buy for the Mac
There’s not much to talk about here, really. Because the only thing that has changed is the port – it went from Lightning to USB-C. Apart from that, there’s nothing new at all.
I know it seems tempting to buy everything USB-C, but if your current Lightning accessories are working just fine then don’t spend your money on new accessories. Given that you are not getting anything new in terms of usable features, it’s best to keep what you have until it breaks down then make the jump to the new accessories.
Also, do keep in mind that the new Magic Keyboard with USB-C and Touch ID only works with an Apple silicon Mac, nothing else. Also, Apple is still selling the Lightning Magic Keyboard with numpad.
And yes, in case you’re wondering, Apple is charging extra for the Black versions of the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad.
If you plan to buy the new iMac, Apple is shipping its new all-in-one desktop with USB-C accessories as well.
