I’m sure you are completely unmoved by tvOS updates. Don’t worry, it’s normal. Apple will ultimately give the platform a big update in the near future – I totally believe in that.
Until that happens, updates like tvOS 18.1 remain important for day-to-day functionality of Apple TV. Therefore, you should go right ahead and download tvOS 18.1, especially if you have a movie night planned so that everything goes through smoothly as possible.
Here’s how you do it:
- Turn on your Apple TV.
- Launch the ‘Settings’ app.
- Go to System > Software Update.
- Install the available tvOS 18.1 update from here.
If you were hoping for some Apple Intelligence action on your Apple TV after this update, I’m here to tell you there isn’t any. However, in the near future it seems as though Apple may bring its AI to the big screen.
Apple will mostly like start its AI journey in the living room with a dedicated smart display with a built-in speaker in its base. That device will most likely be the starting point for Apple where it gets to see how people are using Apple Intelligence around their home.
But, I have no idea how Apple Intelligence will play itself out on a device like the Apple TV. At best, you will be able to get smarter recommendations to a movie or TV show. Anything beyond that is somewhat hard to imagine.
However, if Apple decides to make major hardware changes to Apple TV, such as adding a built-in camera for FaceTime rather than relying on iPhone only, then you can start to imagine where the feature may shine. Until that happens, and it seems unlikely, too, it’s best to just wait this one out.
