Update: Apple has removed the mention of 120Hz from its website and has replaced it with 60Hz. It was a monumental typo, apparently.
Going through the specs of the new iMac, I am starting to see some important changes. One of those changes is external display support.
While the press release tells everyone that the new iMac is capable of handling dual 6K monitors, but it falls short of certain details.
Let me fill you in.
First of all, when you connect the external monitors, the main iMac display resolution – 4.5K – stays the same. Not even the colors change.
But, here’s where things get wild.
The new iMac supports a single 8K monitor at up to 120Hz. You know how bonkers this is? Not even the M3 Max chip supports this. This gives you a glimpse into what the M4 Pro and Max chips will be capable of doing.
As with all things, there’s a small catch. That massive display output is supported on the $1,499 model only with 10-core CPU and GPU. If you are buying the base $1,299 model, you get support for just one 6K display at 60Hz.
For an average user, that is one too many as most workflows are absolutely fine on a single display. But, knowing you get the option to connect another one on the new iMac is an icing on the cake.
