Apple is working on a smart home display, and it gets thoroughly detailed in a brand-new report.
The Apple Smart Home Display will Have a Camera, Huge Focus on Home Control, Dynamic Software and More
It’s no longer a secret that Apple is working on a smart home display. Mark Gurman went all out in his latest report and has spilled the beans on a lot of things that will be a part of the new device.
While the report is extremely detailed, I’m going to keep it as concise as possible.
First and foremost, the device is going to revolve around Apple Intelligence, Siri, and home control. Basically, it’s going to be the centerpiece of your smart home setup.
The device will include apps like Safari, Music, Notes, etc. There isn’t going to be any App Store here. Apple is likely going to bundle some apps, and that’s as far as the software will go initially.
I’m assuming there’s going to be an App Store for it somewhere down the line, but the initial launch will have none of it.
The device will have a touch-screen display, 6-inch in size and will be as big as ‘two iPhones side by side’. And, the software running on the device will be a mix of watchOS and StandBy mode in iOS.
Here comes the best part – the software running on the device is dynamic, and the UI elements will change size depending on how close or far away from the device you are.
This is absolutely believable and exactly the kind of thing you expect Apple to do with a device like this.
There is going to be a built-in FaceTime camera in this device, which will handle all communications. Built-in speakers are also there for playing music and other things.
Since the focus is on home control, Apple is going to allow users to customize their home screen with different widgets for controlling their smart home setup. If you have a smart camera or doorbell, the smart display will be able to show you a video feed from them.
This device is not meant to be placed on a table only. Apple is said to be working on several accessories for it, such as wall attachments, speaker bases for tables and nightstands.
Interestingly, Apple is also working on a higher-end model of this smart display with a robotic arm and all. But that device is apparently several years away.
Last but not least, Apple may just launch this device as early as March 2025.
