Prototype iPhone Shows up Online with Solid-State Volume Buttons, Meant for Field-Testing Experimental Features
I’m sure we will find all sorts of weird and wonderful-looking iPhone prototypes if Apple opens up its lab doors to the public.
Interestingly, a prototype will show up once in a while that shows what Apple has been working on behind closed doors.
Today, one of those prototypes has shown up in a video by AppleDemoYT, and it shows a device with solid-state volume buttons, a feature which has never made it to any iPhone so far.
Take a look at the video below and check out the strangest-looking iPhone ever to exist:
It’s unclear what this iPhone prototype was used to test out, but it was manufactured sometime in 2021 and was meant for field testing purposes.
What feature Apple was field-testing is anyone’s guess.
While we never got solid-state volume buttons on an iPhone, Apple did move to a solid-state Home button with the iPhone 7. If you can recall that iPhone model, the Home button did not click and instead simulated a ‘click’ using the Taptic Engine.
That’s not all, Apple uses ‘pressure-sensitive’ or ‘solid-state’ buttons in AirPods as well. Just squeeze the stem, you hear a click and an action happens.
Another place where Apple does its solid-state magic is an obvious one – the trackpad on the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
Anyway, prototype iPhones are always fun to come across and give us an interesting glimpse into the amount of work that goes into this stuff before we get the final product.
In fact, it’s not just Apple that does this sort of testing. Everyone does it, and it’s hard work that either pays off or it doesn’t.
