This is definitely an exciting one – Apple is reportedly working on a smart doorbell with built-in facial recognition like Face ID.
Apple Set to Go Head to Head with Ring with its Own Smart Doorbell with Built-in Facial Recognition like Face ID
Though there are a ton of smart home accessories available that integrate with HomeKit, there isn’t any hardware from Apple.
Looks like that is all about to change soon.
According to a new report by Mark Gurman, Apple is set to venture into the smart doorbell arena. But that’s not all; it will have built-in facial recognition like Face ID.
What this means is, once the doorbell scans your face, it will automatically unlock the door and let you in.
The move is extremely interesting and comes at a time when the smart doorbell market is straight up owned by companies like Ring and Nest.
Do keep in mind that Apple is working on a doorbell with facial recognition. This means the doorbell will tell the door lock to unlock itself when the owner of the home is detected.
This also means you need to have a smart door lock that needs to be compatible with this doorbell. I do have a feeling many HomeKit door locks will be updated to support it.
The report does say Apple may partner with someone to offer the complete doorbell and door lock package, but it’s just a rumor at this point.
At the time of writing, it is believed that the doorbell is in the early stages of development and will likely go on sale late next year.
Apple is currently working on a bunch of different new products, including a HomePod with a display and even a smart security camera.
