A new report suggests that Apple has stopped working on AR smart glasses that required a Mac to work.

Apple Shutters its AR Smart Glasses that Required a Tether Mac to Fully Function

So, turns out, Apple has been working on a pair of augmented reality smart glasses, and the company just canceled the project, according to Bloomberg.

Before you feel upset about the whole thing, it’s important to know what Apple was actually working on.

The ‘smart glasses’ would work by connecting to a Mac, physically. Yes, you would run a cable from the glasses to the Mac for processing and power needs.

At first, Apple was thinking about using the iPhone as a power source for these glasses, but realized the iPhone wouldn’t be able to keep up, hence why the Mac came into the picture.

Apple realized that this isn’t a good solution at all and it completely shuttered the project this week.

These glasses were reportedly very light compared to the Vision Pro and looked like regular glasses too. But, they worked using a Mac.

Why would you need such a thing?

It’s fair to say that this product was nothing but an accessory for the Mac, one no-one wants.

However, while the project didn’t turn into an actual, shipping product, Apple did develop technologies which will be used in future products.

Apple is still working on a Vision headset and we can expect it to come out soon. Hopefully, this year.

I still have this feeling Apple will ultimately manage to build and ship the AR glasses when certain technologies improve further.

Hopefully, it won’t require a tethered Mac or an iPhone to work.
