Here’s a complete step-by-step tutorial on how to upgrade AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max firmware to the latest version.
Apple Shares Official Steps on Updating AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max to Latest Software Update
So far, the steps to updating your AirPods firmware to the latest version are a mystery. It just happens on its own, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
However, Apple has actually shared the official steps you need to follow in order to install the latest firmware update on your AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.
The steps for installing the firmware on the AirPods and AirPods Pro are the same, while they’re slightly different on the AirPods Max.
AirPods and AirPods Pro
Let’s start with the AirPods and AirPods Pro:
Step 1. Bring your AirPods into Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Make sure your devices are connected to Wi-Fi as well.
Step 2. Make sure your AirPods are in their charging case and the lid is closed.
Step 3. Put your AirPods on charge. Use a USB-C or Lightning cable for this.
Step 4. Let your AirPods rest for 30 minutes and the lid on the charging case should remain closed.
Step 5. Take your AirPods out of the charing case, connect to your iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Your AirPods should be updated to the latest version at this point.
AirPods Max
Step 1. Make sure your iPhone, iPad and Mac are connected to Wi-Fi and your AirPods Max should be in Bluetooth range.
Step 2. Put your AirPods Max on charge using a Lightning or USB-C cable.
Step 3. Let your AirPods Max rest for 30 minutes and on charge.
Step 4. Unplug your AirPods Max and connect to your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Your AirPods Max firmware should now be the latest one.
You can check the firmware version of your AirPods on your iPhone or iPad by going to Settings > AirPods, and then scrolling all the way down.
On the Mac, connect your AirPods, go to System Settings > Bluetooth, and then click on the (i) button next to the AirPods.
One more thing – you may have to repeat the above steps twice in order to install the latest firmware update. Sometimes, it takes a while for the new firmware to roll out to everyone.
