A new report sheds some light on the iPhone 17 Pro cameras, along with an interesting little detail we’re hearing for the first time.
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max Getting Megapixel Upgrade Across the Board, But will Have a Smaller Main Sensor
According to a leak on Weibo, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will feature three 48-megapixel camera sensors.
This is nothing new and something we heard about back in July.
Having three high-resolution sensors means the iPhone 17 Pro will be able to shoot extremely sharp photos and videos using each lens – main, ultra-wide and telephoto.
If you want a small glimpse of how good this is going to be for the next iPhone, just pick up an iPhone 16 Pro, shoot a photo or video, and zoom in.
That ultra-wide camera sensor is 48 megapixels, and it shoots bonkers photos and videos after the upgrade.
The fact that all cameras on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will get the 48-megapixel upgrade is going to be a huge deal.
However, the main camera sensor on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will be a slight downgrade compared to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.
According to the report, the iPhone 17 Pro will use a 1/1.3″ sensor compared to 1/1.28″ sensor from the iPhone 16 Pro.
Trust me, that’s not a typo. A 1/1.3″ sensor is actually smaller.
While it’s easy to label this as a downgrade, I’m going to assume Apple is likely doing this because it is able to pull out the same amount of detail from a smaller camera sensor compared to a larger one.
With a small sensor in place, Apple may get extra room to do more trickery with the camera system. What might that be is anyone’s guess at this point.
We still have a long way to go until the next iPhone lands on our doorstep. Until that happens, we’ll be treated to fine rumors and reports.
