Of all the iPhones ever released, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus win the prize for being put in a strange position, intentionally.
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus Got a Great Announcement and were insanely Put in the Backseat
September 2017 was interesting. Apple took to the stage to announce the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
Though the phones featured the same design as iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, it was a monumental leap forward – it had the fast A11 Bionic chip and wireless charging for the first time in an iPhone.
It was a decent upgrade. But calling it iPhone 8 was rather ambitious – iPhone 7s would have been just fine.
But hey, who is to question Apple’s marketing, right?
When the announcement was done, Apple showed off the iPhone X next. With that, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were left in an awkward position.
By the end of the keynote, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were like “I’m here too, if you need me.”
One look at Apple’s website at the time, and you’ll zoom past the iPhone 8 like it’s not even there. The Home button iPhone lost its charm completely and was suddenly the underdog, which people gave a thumbs up to for trying.
I still remember getting the iPhone 8 Plus before buying the iPhone X. It was a beautiful phone and wireless charging made things way too convenient.
I really wish Apple gave the Home button iPhone a nice sendoff rather than just tossing it away like that.
However, if you think about it, there was no other way to go about this. Apple skipped the version number and went straight to ‘8’, and with that, it dialed down the Home button entirely.
But the thing that surprises me the most is this – till the time of writing this, Apple has sold the iPhone 8 design as a ‘cheaper’ alternative to the iPhone SE. And that too is going away in a few weeks’ time.
