The MacBook Air will get a significant LCD upgrade before it ultimately goes for OLED across the board.
Apple Moving from Amorphous Silicon to Oxide TFT in 2027 MacBook Air, Allowing for Improved Performance and Battery Life
Apple’s MacBook Air is expected to get an OLED upgrade, which will significantly enhance the overall viewing experience on the laptop. However, that plan has been delayed.
In fact, that plan has been delayed several times already, mainly due to cost concerns.
But, according to a brand-new report by The Elec, Apple is set to give the MacBook Air a display upgrade. But, it’s not going to be OLED. Instead, Apple has decided to go for an improved LCD panel.
This means the current amorphous silicon display will be replaced by oxide TFT.
Sounds like a boring move, right? But it isn’t. In fact, it’s good for users.
See, the jump to Oxide TFT means the MacBook Air will have a display with more uniform lighting capabilities, reduced motion blur, improved response time, enhanced scrolling experiences, and extended battery life.
Samsung Display and BOE are tasked with manufacturing these displays, and we can expect the upgraded MacBook Air with the new Oxide TFT display in 2027, if everything goes according to plan.
Interestingly, the MacBook Air isn’t the only laptop that is getting a display upgrade.
With the release of the M4 MacBook Pro lineup, Apple started using Quantum Dot technology, which significantly improves the overall quality of the display, translating to richer color output and improved performance.
If that’s the sort of thing coming to MacBook Air as well, I’m completely sold. Add in a little bit of high refresh rate on top, and I’ll be the first one to get that notebook.
