Apple is still working with Sony on bringing PS VR controller support to Vision Pro, and the feature is set for launch later this year.
PS VR Controller Support Coming to Vision Pro with visionOS 3, Will Support Controlling the OS with More Precision
In December of last year, an interesting report came up suggesting that Apple is working with Sony to bring PS VR controller support to Vision Pro.
There has been silence on that end for quite a while now, and the latest report from Bloomberg says the work is still on track.
The update here is that the support for PlayStation VR controller is coming to the Vision Pro later this year, and will likely be a part of the visionOS 3 update that is set to be announced this Summer.
However, there’s an interesting little detail that immediately stands out in the report.
While it is obvious that PS VR support has more to do with gaming than anything else, because of ‘PlayStation.’ However, the report says PS VR support will allow “controlling the operating system with more precision”.
Apple is going full Meta Quest here, and I like it.
See, the thing is, while Apple’s approach is absolutely fantastic, allowing users to look at a UI element and pinch their fingers to perform an action, sometimes a physical controller just makes more sense.
There are a ton of people out there that prefer using their Vision Pro with Apple’s Magic Trackpad and Keyboard. The addition of PS VR controller support will definitely aid in ‘pointing’ at stuff in visionOS.
In case you don’t know, using hand gestures to control the Meta Quest is an optional feature, while Meta Horizon OS is primarily focused on being used with the physical controllers.
Apple is definitely taking a route that is the other way around, but I’m sure many users out there are going to like this support for a ton of reasons.
