AirPods Max is getting a software update next month that will add lossless support to the headphones.

AirPods Max with USB-C Getting 24-bit, 48kHz Lossless Support via Software Update Next Month

The USB-C AirPods Max might be the most underwhelming update in the entire AirPods lineup. However, Apple has changed that today with the announcement of lossless audio support.

If you have AirPods Max with USB-C, Apple is releasing a software update in April that will enable lossless audio support for the headphones. Of course, lossless support only works using a cable, and the included USB-C to USB-C cable will handle all of that.

If you want to use AirPods Max in regular wireless mode, you do have that option, but lossless support only works over USB-C.

With lossless support, users of AirPods Max will be able to listen to audio in 24-bit, 48kHz. Do keep in mind that you need a source that supports lossless audio in order to take advantage of this feature.

If you’re subscribed to Apple Music, there are over 100 million songs that already support lossless playback. That is a very good starting point for anyone.

Apple says the AirPods Max are the first and only headphones that can be used to create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking. Definitely great news for those who write and create music on devices like iPad and Mac.

If you’ve been looking for a reason to get the USB-C version of AirPods Max over Lightning, then this is the best one Apple has given us so far.

But do you really need it? If you find yourself listening to audio wirelessly all the time, then you’re absolutely fine with what you have and not missing out on anything.

Last but not least, the software update will be available in April alongside iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS 15.4 Sequoia.
