A new report says Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will shoot 8K video.
Apple to Step up iPhone Video Recording Capabilities by Bringing 8K to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 shoots 4K video, and it’s pretty good 4K too. However, a recent report suggested that Apple is going to focus on the iPhone 17’s video recording capabilities, all set to take things up a notch.
Now, a new leak has popped up on Weibo, saying that Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro is going to feature 8K video recording capabilities.
It makes sense why Apple would bring 8K to the iPhone 17 Pro and skip it on the iPhone 16 Pro.
It all boils down to megapixels.
See, the thing is, the iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to feature three 48-megapixel sensors, allowing it to shoot 8K video from all three lenses.
On the iPhone 16 Pro, while the main sensor and ultra-wide are 48-megapixels, the telephoto lens is not.
For the sake of consistency, it makes sense for Apple to not ship the feature with the iPhone 16 Pro and wait until the iPhone 17 Pro instead.
While 8K is great and all, since you end up with sharper quality footage, I have a ton of questions already. For example, will 8K be limited to just 24 or 30 frames per second? Will the new iPhones be able to shoot 8K footage in ProRes?
That last one is extremely important since 8K is going to eat away at internal storage.
Speaking of which, will the iPhone be able to shoot 8K video internally at all? Or will it be limited to shooting on an external drive?
I can keep on going because the iPhone 17 Pro camera is going to be extremely exciting.
