AirPods Max with USB-C Receive 7E99 Firmware Update with Support for Lossless Audio Support

Update: Apple had to pull the update due to a bug. A new version – 7E101 – is now available for download.

The new firmware update, version 7E99, is now available for AirPods Max, or the USB-C version of the headphones, to be exact.

The update was released right after iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 were seeded for iPhone and iPad devices around the world.

With the firmware is installed on your AirPods Max, you can use the included USB-C cable to listen to lossless audio from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Just make sure you’re subscribed to something like Apple Music to listen to high-fidelity audio.

If you want to push the firmware update to your AirPods Max immediately, you can check out the tutorial posted here.

You must download iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 for full compatibility as well. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update and then tap on Update Now when the 18.4 update becomes available for download.

Apart from AirPods Max, Apple has released software updates for AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 as well. The new update takes AirPods Pro 2 to version 7E93 and 7B20 on the AirPods 4.

Do keep in mind that 7B20 is available for both the regular AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Canceling.
