A new report says that Apple is working on a Vision headset that is exactly what people want: cheaper and lighter.
Apple Working on Cheaper and Lighter Headset, Vision Pro Successor to Support Hardwired Connection to a Mac
The latest news surrounding the Vision headset is very interesting. According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a successor to the Vision Pro that can be hardwired to a Mac for an extremely low latency connection.
You can’t do that with the current Vision Pro unless you’re willing to shell out $300 for the Developer Strap, which has a ton of limitations of its own, especially bandwidth.
With a direct connection using USB-C, developers and accessory makers can really leverage the power of Vision Pro, especially in places like medicine where low latency is crucial.
However, the interesting part of the report is this: Apple is working on a cheaper and lighter version of the headset for release in the future. For context, the current Vision Pro headset starts at $3,499 and weighs 1.5 pounds.
Definitely expensive and definitely heavy.
There’s no time-frame regarding release at all. Previous reports said Apple is going to release the M5-powered Vision Pro this year while the cheaper model has been delayed.
Another interesting report from a year ago said that the cheaper Vision headset will require a Mac to work, but apparently Apple is taking a different course where a tethered connection will offer better latency instead while the headset will act as an independent device.
