Despite all the ‘issues’ Apple is having in its software lineup, iOS 8.0.1 is, in my opinion, the worst to date.

From ‘No Service’ to a Disabled Touch ID Sensor, iOS 8.0.1 Takes the Cake for Being Apple’s Worst Software Update

The year is 2014. You just bought an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, and are ready to install a brand-new software update on it – iOS 8.0.1.

Back then, I was a tech reporter on another website. The moment I saw the update, I had to install it and test it out. After all, it was my job to report on new changes and whatnot.

Anyway, my iPhone 6 Plus downloaded and installed the update without issue and the moment my iPhone booted back up, the dreaded ‘No Service’ message was sitting at the place where cellular signal bars should have been.

Maybe it’s just a glitch with my cellular service right? It wasn’t, and it got worse.

I realized Touch ID wasn’t working either. No matter what I did, the fingerprint sensor was not working at all.

Apple immediately pulled the update when people started to complain about the update.

Believe it or not, iOS 8.0.1 update was supposed to fix a lot of bugs, as noted in the changelog at the time.

From HealthKit-related issues to third-party keyboards not working properly, this was a big bug-fix release.

After a while, Apple issued an apology and asked people to perform an ‘iTunes Restore’ to make everything right again.

What makes this update even worse is when you realized that this issue was limited to Apple’s flagship at the time – the iPhone 6.

While we all give Apple a lot of hard time for quality-related issues, if you were an iPhone user when the 8.0.1 software update came out, you’ll be thankful for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

At least Apple is not asking its customers for an ‘iTunes Restore’.
