The Apple Pro Display XDR 2 is said to get an upgrade to Quantum Dot, but there’s no word on its release at all.
Apple to Release Pro Display XDR 2 with Quantum Dot Display Film and Drop KSF Phosphor
With Apple moving to Quantum Dot displays on the new MacBook Pro lineup, it only makes sense for the company to do the same on other products as well.
Ross Young, a reputable analyst, believes that too and says the Apple Pro Display XDR 2, which was released back in 2019, will receive an upgrade to Quantum Dot as well.
This is as far as he went with the news. It’s unclear when the next Apple monitor will come out, but whenever it does, expect it to be more color-accurate and have better motion performance.
The current Pro Display XDR is a beast of a display still, even though it does not use Quantum Dot. It packs a monstrous 6K resolution with a peak brightness of 1,600 nits and a refresh rate of 60Hz.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the next model keeps these specs the same but bumps up the refresh rate to 120Hz, at least. This upgrade alone is going to be a huge treat for content creators, especially those who love working with high-frame-rate videos.
However, I believe a true breakthrough will only happen if Apple switches from Mini LED to tandem OLED on the next Pro Display XDR. This means the monitor will offer extremely high levels of brightness and crazy contrast levels.
But, it remains to be seen if Apple can deliver such a product while keeping the cost down, as the current one starts at $4,999, and OLED still is premium technology even after all these years.
Another big upgrade the Pro Display XDR needs is a built-in FaceTime camera and speakers. It’s puzzling that such a high-end monitor skips out on these features completely.
