A report from a reputable source says that the iPhone 17 Air will be just 5.5mm thick at its thinnest point.
iPhone 17 Air Set to be Apple’s Thinnest iPhone to Date with the Phone Being Just 5.5mm Thick at its Thinnest Point
With every passing report, the iPhone 17 Air is getting thinner and thinner. Previously, the phone was reported to be just 6.25mm thick.
Ming-Chi Kuo has jumped into the scene once again with his supply chain wisdom and says the iPhone 17 Air is going to be just 5.5mm at its thinnest point.
If the iPhone 17 Air is 5.5mm at its ‘thinnest point,’ then it could mean previous reports were taking into account the camera bump, instead of the actual chassis itself.
Or, we are all wrong, and Apple is planning to release a wedge-shaped phone to confuse everyone.
To make this ultra-thin iPhone possible, Apple is said to be ditching the physical SIM card completely. Ming-Chi Kuo says the iPhone 17 Air is going to be eSIM-only.
I don’t see this as a problem given that many countries and carriers now actively support the eSIM standard.
Previously, we did hear that Apple is going to be making some sacrifices in order to achieve that thinness, such as ditching the second speaker.
Apple is also expected to rely on its in-house 5G modem for the iPhone 17 Air. That very same modem iteration is expected to lack mmWave 5G.
This isn’t the only iPhone 17-related news we are hearing today. Earlier, it came to our attention that the iPhone 17 Pro lineup is going to feature three 48-megapixel cameras.
The upgrade to 48-megapixels is going to be huge for photographers and videographers.
Coming back to the iPhone 17 Air, the phone won’t feature high-end specs at all. Instead, the sole focus will be on the thin design, giving potential buyers a glimpse into the future of iPhones.
I’m not sure if going that thin is going to work wonders for Apple since people tend to gravitate towards extremely high-end specs. But it will be interesting to see ultra-thin phones out in the wild.
