That title is not a typo. Apple’s Lightning to HDMI adapter has the capability to run Doom, the very same one from 1993.

Someone Managed to Jailbreak Apple’s Lightning to HDMI Adapter and Installed Doom on it

Whenever we see a dongle or adapter lying around, we don’t give much thought to its existence. We know it does a specific task and nothing beyond that.

In the case of Apple’s Lightning to HDMI adapter, that’s not the case.

In fact, the adapter actually runs powerful software that is basically iOS at its core. And since Lightning does not have the necessary bandwidth to output video, Apple added a SoC in the adapter too.

That SoC and software work together to read the video output signal from an iPhone or iPad, and you can view it on the big screen using HDMI.

Since this means the adapter itself is a tiny little ‘computer,’ someone was able to jailbreak it, install Doom, and have it play on an external monitor using HDMI.

Don’t believe me? Have a look at the video below:

At this point, it’s a running meme whether or not a device can run Doom. We’ve seen the MacBook Pro Touch Bar run it, including calculators, smart fridges, and so on. It’s the ultimate test for developers and devices these days.

The interesting thing here is this; the adapter is actually an extremely powerful device and now it makes sense why Apple charges so much money for it.

It’s $49, in case you’re wondering.

But, at the same time, the move to USB-C makes the adapter unnecessary. There’s no doubt Lightning had its shortcomings, and that’s the reason why such an advanced adapter existed in the first place.
