Meta is testing a new feature that lets you put apps around you freely, kinda like the Vision Pro. This feature is part of the v67 update.
Meta Quest v67 Update Adds Experimental Feature that Lets You Freely Place Apps Around You Just like Vision Pro
The one thing that sets the Vision Pro apart from Meta Quest is this – spatial computing. The Vision Pro is very good at it and Apple made it with that purpose in mind. If someone is buying the Vision headset, they’re basically buying a computer. The Quest, on the other hand, works best as an entertainment device, with gaming right at the top of things it does best.
With the latest experimental update as part of the v67 update, via RoadtoVR, Meta wants the Quest to function more like the Vision Pro, allowing users to freely put their 2D apps around them. Basically, you can have the browser window in the living room, some other app in the kitchen and you can walk around the house accessing them however you like. You’re not limited to using just three apps above the dock as it currently works.
Obviously, there’s a limit to this feature – you can have three apps right above the dock, or launcher, if you want to call it that, and also have further three free floating apps which you can place anywhere at all. This gives you complete flexibility in how you want your work setup to be.
Honestly, I think this is a very good update and something that makes the Meta Quest more useful as a computer than an entertainment device. However, the lack of useful productivity apps somewhat makes this update lose its charm. Who knows developers might just finally take the Meta Quest seriously as a computer than a gaming-first headset.
This experimental feature is part of the v67 update which is currently available as a public beta. Given how quickly Meta rolls out these updates to the public, it’s best to just wait for the final version in the days or weeks to come.
