A new report says that Apple’s standalone AR glasses plan is still intact, and the company is going to take some time with it.

Apple’s Plan to Create a Standalone Pair of AR Glasses is Intact, But it May Take Several Years to Reach the Market

We recently heard the news that Apple canceled its pair of smart glasses that required a Mac to work. While that specific product is definitely done and dusted, Apple is still working on a pair of standalone AR glasses.

According to Bloomberg, Apple’s working on standalone AR glasses continues under hardware chief John Ternus. However, the company is not in a rush to get these to the market.

Instead, it’s going to take some time to get it right as it does not want to release a bad product which no-one ends up using.

The thing that makes such glasses a reality are the underlying technologies, which include the displays and silicon that powers them. Currently, it’s the early days, and those things aren’t ready for use in a product yet.

With time, Apple and its suppliers will slowly get there too.

Before the standalone AR glasses even reach the market, I’m sure we will end up seeing several iterations of the Vision headset.

And why wouldn’t we? After all, the technology that makes the Vision Pro tick is live – all that’s needed is some refinement so that it gets into the hands, and heads, of everyone.

Apple has been pushing AR for a long, long time. The first product that truly realizes Apple’s dream is Vision Pro, but the price of being an early adopter is way too high.

Hopefully, with future iterations of Vision, the cost will come down, and Apple will be able to market other categories of products such as smart glasses. But it’s too early to say if it will even do well among consumers.

Smartphone and tablets are extremely familiar products, and small variations of them, such as foldables, tend to do just fine. But convincing someone to put a computer on their face for the whole day isn’t going to be easy.
