I wouldn’t hold my breath for this one, but apparently Apple has tested out a 7.5W reverse wireless charging feature on the iPhone 17 Pro.
Apple has been Testing 7.5W Reverse Wireless Charging on the iPhone 17 Pro, May or May Not End up in the Final Shipping Model
Reverse wireless charging does exist on the iPhone, but it works on just one thing – the Apple MagSafe Battery Pack.
Connect the thing to the back of your iPhone, plug in the USB-C or Lightning cable into your iPhone, and it will power the battery pack too using reverse wireless charging.
That’s as far as things went in the past few years.
However, a new leak from Weibo suggests that Apple has once again tested the feature on the iPhone 17 Pro, and it could be used to charge things like AirPods, Apple Watch, or maybe another iPhone.
But, there’s also a chance this feature will never make it to iPhone.
The thing is, smartphones have gotten so good lately, it’s very hard to keep things fresh and exciting by improving features like the camera, display, etc. So, in order to grab the attention of potential buyers, Apple might just toss in reverse wireless charging as a ‘bonus’ feature.
But I’m not sure how much useful this is on a smartphone. While it does sound good in theory, once you start to factor in things like heat and inefficiency, it all falls apart.
Who knows? Apple might have just figured this one out and believes it’s the right time to launch this feature.
The iPhone 17 Pro is also expected to feature 35W wired charging and may even ditch titanium in favor of aluminum.
