A new report says Apple is set to transition to its in-house Wi-Fi chips with the iPhone 17 lineup.
iPhone 17 Lineup to Use Apple’s Own Wi-Fi Chip, iPhone 17 Air to Use C1 5G Modem
Apple announced the iPhone 16e yesterday, and with that, the company also revealed its first-ever in-house 5G modem, the C1.
A new report from Ming-Chi Kuo reveals that Apple is going to expand Apple silicon into more areas, more specifically, Wi-Fi.
Currently, Apple is using chips from Broadcom for Wi-Fi, and the company is going to replace it with its own chip for the entire iPhone 17 lineup. The reason for this is ‘enhanced connectivity’ and ‘reduced cost.’
Given the amount of battery gain the iPhone 16e is seeing with Apple’s own 5G modem, this doesn’t come as a surprise at all that the company is doing the same with Wi-Fi.
The report reveals another interesting bit of information: the iPhone 17 Air is going to be the only smartphone in the iPhone 17 lineup that uses Apple’s own 5G modem.
Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple is going to use the C1 chip in the iPhone 17. If that’s so, you can expect sub-6GHz 5G on the iPhone 17 Air only.
For most people, sub-6GHz 5G is absolutely fine, and no one is sitting around downloading movies from Apple’s servers at 2.5Gbps speeds. At best, people are checking social media, uploading a bad photo of a bowl of pasta – that’s about it.
