RCS is finally stepping up its game and will match iMessage in terms of security on iPhone.

Apple and GSMA Announce End-to-End Encryption for RCS, Coming to iPhone in Future Software Update

The one thing that makes iMessage instantly better and a preferred way of communicating is security. RCS doesn’t have that.

Believe it or not, RCS messages and media can easily be intercepted, which is nothing short of alarming.

Thankfully, all of that is about to change as Apple has announced, in collaboration with GSMA, that the new RCS Universal Profile 3.0 includes end-to-end encryption, allowing users to safely and privately communicate with each other.

At the time of writing, RCS does not support encryption on iPhone. Apple says the new profile will be rolled out in a future software update, bringing end-to-end encryption to everyone.

It’s unclear when exactly this software update will roll out. But given how important privacy and security has been for Apple, there is a chance we might see the update way sooner than expected.

But again, these things tend to roll out very slowly.

While this is great news, do keep in mind it’s only useful for those whose carrier actually supports RCS. It was only recently we found out RCS is coming to Google Fi users on iPhone with iOS 18.4, which is surprisingly quite late.

While RCS does solve a huge messaging problem, allowing users from different platforms to freely communicate with each other, the majority of users do not care about it at all.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit, as most users are more invested in apps like WhatsApp, which offers far more features.
