Apple has launched a new Maps Surveyor app for iPhone, allowing users to contribute and improve Apple Maps.

Apple’s Maps Surveyor App Released on App Store to Keep Apple Maps Data Up to Date

It takes a lot of effort to keep services like Google Maps and Apple Maps up to date, therefore user-contributed data is vital to ensure you get to your destination safely and accurately.

Apple has launched a brand-new Maps Surveyor app for iPhone in which you can help the company improve its mapping effort. This includes taking photographs of street lights, signs and other objects so that they can placed properly on the map.

Basically, it’s not a straightforward thing. The app will ask you to place your iPhone on a mount while you drive to your destination, and it will take photographs automatically along the way.

That’s actually a big ask from Apple, and it knows this. That’s why this app isn’t meant for everyone. It’s meant for companies that are likely contributing data to Apple Maps, not mere mortals like me.

However, you can still go right ahead and download the app from the App Store by going to this link. It’s for iPhone only, and there are a number of steps you have to follow before you actually start contributing data.
