The iPhone lets you shoot square or 16:9 format photos right from the Camera app. Here’s how you can set it up.
Bored of Shooting Regular Photos Using Your iPhone? Try Square or 16:9 to Add Variety to Your Photography
Ever noticed there’s a ‘Square’ photo mode in the Camera app on iPad? But on iPhone, it’s apparently missing. It’s not, really. You just have to enable the mode in order to use it. By default, the camera app shoots 4:3 photos and that’s what everyone needs. You don’t have to use any other mode, unless you are going for a certain look or preference.
In this tutorial I’m going to show you how you can shoot square as well as 16:9 photos right from the Camera app. This tutorial is going to be very quick, I promise you.
Step 1. Launch the Camera app.
Step 2. Slide over to the ‘Photo’ mode if you’re in any other mode.
Step 3. Swipe up above the shutter button to reveal a bunch of options.
Step 4. Over here you’ll see a bunch of new controls, including one that says 4:3. Tap on that.
Step 5. You now have three options to choose from and one is already selected, that is 4:3. You can either choose Square or 16:9. Choose the latter if you want to snap photos in a slightly wider format or the former which is perfect for social media.
Shooting square photos is actually quite fun. It’s perfect for social media and a great way to compose certain kinds of shots. For example, you want to show off your everyday carry lying on a table, the square format makes it look good without much effort.
On the other hand, the 16:9 format is a complete disaster if you’re shooting photos using the main camera. You might not find any use for it at all there. However, once you switch over to the ultra-wide camera, you will immediately find use for it as it crops out the lens distortion, leaving you with an amazing wide view.
Basically, you have to play around with these modes a little to find the one that works in the right situation.
