I had the opportunity to check out Plugable’s 40W dual USB-C charger. Here are all my thoughts on it and why you should consider buying it.
Plulgable’s 40W Dual USB-C Charger is Perfect for Charging an iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch
First thing’s first, Plugable did send me a review unit to check out, and it was been sitting idle on my desk for quite a while. So, I decided to give it a spin. Maybe I should have done that the moment it arrived at my doorstep.

I have a thing for USB-C chargers. No matter the form or number of ports, I’ll fall in love immediately, because they’re forever useful. However, if one’s going to find a place in my backpack to charge my gear, it has to be small. Small enough that I can wrap my fingers around it. And this charger from Plugable ticks that box so perfectly, I had doubts whether this is actually a 40W charger or not.
I immediately connected this thing to a tester and yes, it’s definitely 40W. But how is it so small?!
As the name gives it away, the Plugable 40W dual USB-C charger has two ports and has a total power output of 40W that is shared between those two ports. When you connect the first device to charge, that device gets the most power and prioritized while the second one charges at a normal pace.
I was wondering how this might be useful, then I realized it definitely is. Especially in a situation when you have multiple gadgets and one of them, especially your iPhone needs to get juiced up first. It’s actually genius how Plugable pulled this off.
If you connect a single device to this charger, it gets the full 40W. That’s great, since many chargers, for the longest time, would supply only 50% of power using a single USB-C port only. You’ll find none of that here. You get raw 40W of power when connected to a single device.
Unlike a ton of other chargers, this one has a built-in LED light at the top that turns blue indicating fast charging. It turns green for regular charging speeds. In nerd talk, that light turns blue when 9V charging is enabled, and green for 5V.
This charger is extremely low profile and is designed to fit in the tightest of spaces. And thanks to its foldable pins, it fits inside every pocket easily.
Obviously, it has to fit somewhere in the Apple ecosystem, right? Of course, and I am going to compare it to Apple’s very-own 35W dual-port USB-C charger. Since the Plugable option gives you extra power of 5W, you get slightly more head-room to charge faster. Whether it’s a combo of iPhone and iPad, iPhone and MacBook, MacBook and iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch, this charger will handle it like it’s a walk in the park.
If you’re carrying Apple devices with you, this charger is going to do you good along every step of the way. Even if you plan on using it at home, you will never be disappointed at the speeds you get to charge up.
