There are plenty of ‘minimal’ camera apps available for iPhone. But, once you try out Zerocam, there’s probably no going back to anything else.
With Next-to-None Post-Processing and Zero In-app Controls, Zerocam for iPhone is the Most Minimal Camera App for iPhone Out there
At the end of the day, camera apps for iPhone are more or less the same. You press the shutter button, the app does some post-processing to make the image look good and it’s ultimately saved to the Photos app for you to look at. Sure, you do get some filter options and whatnot, but the underlying architecture is almost always the same.
Zerocam, on the other hand, does next to zero post-processing. The images you shoot look close to raw and yet so crispy. It suddenly makes you realize the amount of processing that goes into the final image if you are shooting using the iOS Camera app. You don’t get any sort of Smart HDR processing, no over-sharpening, no color adjustments, absolutely nothing. The images look flat and give out a film-style vibe in some cases.
Believe it or not, the final image actually looks kinda great. It is extremely refreshing to look at given how different it looks from the usual iPhone photos you’ve been shooting over the years.
The app itself is so minimal, it is going to split people into two opinion groups – I love it, I hate it. Because, the moment you launch the app, you are greeted with just a shutter button, nothing else. Apart from said shutter button, there is absolutely nothing else on the UI.
At this point, you must be wondering, how do I switch between camera lenses? Believe it or not, you do that by tapping and holding the Zerocam app icon on the home screen and you’ll see all the options for choosing a lens there. There are zero control buttons inside the app. This may look like an inconvenience, but it really forces you to pay attention to what you’re shooting rather than gawk at countless on-screen buttons. In essence, the app forces you to be a better photographer.
With Zerocam, you also get a Lock Screen widget, allowing you to quickly jump into the app and start shooting photos.
Now, here comes the interesting part – the app is absolutely free to download and try. But, it will limit you to shooting just 12 photos per day. That’s not a bad deal if you’re a minimal photographer. If you want to shoot unlimited photos, you can pay $9.99. That price may seem a little too steep for an app with no features, but it is what it is.
