It’s inevitable – your iPhone’s battery health will eventually fall to 99% and keep on falling. But, it’s mostly your fault that speeds up the process. Let me explain.
Battery Health on iPhone is Affected by a Ton of Things, But it Mainly Boils Down to Plain old Heat
The thing about batteries is, they are consumables. They don’t last forever and the chemistry that keeps them going will eventually fall apart and the physics surrounding them can either slow down or speed up their demise. Following so far? Great!
With the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, Apple is advertising up to 1,000 charge cycles before battery health reaches 80% (in ideal charging conditions). That’s double compared to previous iPhone models which also means you can keep these phones with you for a longer period of time before they require a battery swap.
You can check your charging cycles by going to Settings > General > Battery > Battery Health on your iPhone. Don’t be alarmed at what you see. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the 100% figure.
There are a lot of things you can do to keep your battery health close to 100%. This includes stuff like keeping your charge level between 20% and 80% and never charging all the way to 100%. You can also use a slow charger instead of a fast one. It’s recommended that you use the official charger and cable with your iPhone, too. All of these things genuinely help.
Until you learn this tiny little fact.
The Reality is Kinda Dark – Your Epic Phone Case is Slow Poisoning Your iPhone
See, batteries function well as long as they are operating under their specified temperature limits. If you exceed or go under those limits, you’ll notice a massive degradation in performance. Keep those extreme conditions consistent and you’ll start damaging the battery and your battery health will start rapidly.
With that in mind, your massive protective case around the iPhone is not helping preserve battery health at all. While it works great protecting your phone, it’s also significantly bumping up the temperature every single time you charge up your iPhone. You’ll be surprised at the amount of heat your phone generates while it’s on charge. The best practice here is to take the case off completely while putting it on charge. And no, you’re not fooling anyone with shoving your case-less iPhone under the pillow while it’s on charge since you’ve cut off ventilation completely.
Using the iPhone under the scorching heat of the sun with a case around it will also raise temperature leading to performance loss and battery damage. Although cases are great, but they’re silent culprits in hurting your phone’s battery, especially if you’re wirelessly charging since that super-convenient method is notorious for generating excessive heat.
The choice you are going to make is a tough one going forward.
Case? Case-Less? Mix of Both?
Is battery health important to you? Do you want your iPhone in pristine condition at all times? The choice is ultimately going to be yours. I’m here to share information that can potentially keep your phone’s battery in top-notch condition. The ideal course of action is this – take your case off while charging, that’s all.
Or, if you’re bold enough, go completely case-less.
