I know you’ve been waiting for this. Apple has announced that it is bringing Apple Pay to non-Safari browsers such as Chrome, Edge and others.
Apple’s Finally Bringing Apple Pay to Browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Edge – Feature Will Roll Out Later this Year
Believe it or not, WWDC 2024 is still underway and the company is making announcements behind the scenes to developers. This includes new tools, APIs and other stuff that is meant for the good of everyone. In those set of announcements, Apple announced that it is bringing Apple Pay to browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge and more.
Privacy has been kept in mind and the implementation of Apple Pay in these browsers is different to how it is in Safari. The way it works is quite genius, too. Whenever you’re at checkout, a QR code will show up, you scan it using your iPhone that has Apple Pay and it will securely make the payment. As simple as that.
The only thing you should know about is that the iPhone must be running iOS 18. We wish this feature started rolling out quickly but it seems as though it will definitely take some time as implementing such things is not easy.
I think this is awesome news, no matter how you slice it. Keeping services like Apple Pay limited to your homegrown browser is a bad move, especially if you plan to move to some other desktop operating system while keeping your iPhone in your pocket.
