Apple is going to release an upgraded Vision Pro headset in 2025 with the new M5 chip. The cheaper Vision headset is delayed.
Vision Pro Powered by M5 Coming in 2025 While Cheaper Headset Delayed Until 2027
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is going to release an upgraded model of the Vision Pro in 2025. That upgrade is going to feature a brand new M5 chip and I’m going to take a guess and say this chip upgrade will bring Apple Intelligence to the headset as well.
Of course, it would.
A new Vision Pro coming in 2025 is definitely great news for those who believe in its potential. But, there’s bad news, too.
The bad news is, Apple is delaying the cheaper Vision headset until 2027 at least.
Previous reports made us believe Apple is shelving the Vision Pro to make room for its cheaper headset. But turns out, that might not be true at all.
Apple is going ahead with a new Vision Pro with a faster M5 chip to replace the current M2-powered model, while putting the cheaper model on hold.
The reason for the delay of the cheaper headset is pretty interesting, too. It is believed that Apple reducing the price of the headset and then launching it does not guarantee success or usefulness.
I understand Apple wants to get this right before releasing it to the public. But honestly, I’m disappointed. If there’s one thing I was absolutely looking forward to in 2025, it’s the cheaper Vision headset.
As someone who firmly believes Vision Pro’s only problem is its monstrous $3,499 price, the delay of the cheaper model and the release of the M5 model do not strike too much confidence. This is especially important when the Vision Pro isn’t a mass-market product at all, something which Tim Cook admitted to as well.
On the flip side, the launch of a new model gives out a message that Apple remains committed to the visionOS platform. But that commitment isn’t going to lure people in, especially if the hardware starts at $3,499.
I’m not even sure if the inclusion of Apple Intelligence is going to make people jump onboard the VisionOS platform overnight.
Though Ming-Chi Kuo has a good track record, I do wish this report is incorrect, and Apple does release a cheaper headset sooner rather than later.
