Apple is supposed to launch an OLED MacBook Air in 2027, but a new report suggests the company might miss that target.
Report Suggests Apple will Delay the OLED MacBook Air Beyond 2027 Due to High OLED Panel Costs
Slowly and gradually, Apple is planning to bring OLED display tech to all of its product lineups. The switch has already been made with iPad Pro, and Apple is working to bring it to the iPad mini 8 and the M6 MacBook Pro.
Rumor has it that Apple is looking to switch the MacBook Air display from LCD to OLED as well. Reports say that the switch will happen in 2027. But, according to a brand-new report by TheElec, it may not happen.
The MacBook Air is definitely going to happen, but Apple is going to miss the 2027 launch window and will see delays. The reason for this is actually quite interesting – high OLED display costs.
With the switch to OLED, Apple is going to pay a premium for the display, a cost that will fall over to the consumer, just like the iPad Pro. And if recent iPad Pro sales data is anything to go by, an OLED display is not a good enough reason for people to pay extra money for an entire device.
Keeping that in mind, Apple is seeking a lower price for OLED panels for use in the MacBook Air. But so far, Apple has yet to find these panels, which means a delay in launching the OLED MacBook Air seems imminent.
It will be interesting to see what sort of visual upgrade Apple plans to bring to the MacBook Air with the switch from LCD to OLED. HDR content is going to be at the top of the list, but are people actually watching such content too much on their MacBook Airs?
If Apple manages to keep the price point the same and bring OLED to the Air, the notebook is going to be an epic value and a massive upgrade, too.
