You have the option to replace Spotlight search with Type to Siri and Apple Intelligence on your Mac running macOS Sierra.

Replace the Boring Old Spotlight Search with Type to Siri Powered by Apple Intelligence on the Mac Running macOS Sequoia

Apple Intelligence has really changed the way I work on the Mac. From Writing Tools to summarizing webpages, I’m having a blast.

Another amazing thing in macOS Sequoia is Type to Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence. This is a feature that is available on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.1 as well.

There are multiple ways you can access Type to Siri, starting with the dedicated button right in the menu bar by default. Just click on it once, and it will show up.

But wait, there’s more.

You can press the Globe+S key on the keyboard to bring up Type to Siri as well. And if you’ve enabled the double-press Command shortcut, that’s another way to access it.

However, if Type to Siri has truly taken over your life on a daily basis, you will be pleased to learn that you can replace Spotlight search with it, too.

By replacing it, I mean replacing it with the shortcut you use to bring up Spotlight search. If you hit Command+Space on your keyboard, instead of Spotlight, you can have Type to Siri instead.

Replace Spotlight with Type to Siri

Step 1. Launch ‘System Settings.’

Step 2. Click on ‘Apple Intelligence & Siri’ on the left.

Step 3. Find ‘Keyboard Shortcut’ and click on it to reveal more options.

Step 4. You’ll see ‘Customize’ at the bottom. Click on it.

Step 5. Press ‘Command+Space’ on the keyboard and your shortcut will be recorded and saved.

Step 6. Press Command+Space on the keyboard and Type to Siri will show up instead of Spotlight.

While you have replaced Spotlight with Type to Siri, do keep in mind I will still recommend Spotlight if you find yourself doing a ton of local device searching.

Instead, I will recommend going with the Globe+S shortcut and keep both Spotlight and Type to Siri running side by side. It will be a while before Siri can completely replace Spotlight.

Today is definitely not that day.

However, the replacement will become relevant when new updates to macOS Sequoia become available with a bunch of new Apple Intelligence improvements. Especially with the inclusion of ChatGPT support.
