A rumor that is super old at this point, Apple is considering making its own TV set, and it makes sense why it is doing it now.
Apple is Considering Making a TV Once Again, and the Timing is Simply Perfect
This rumor has been floating around for such a long time. I’m surprised that it’s back again. According to Mark Gurman in his PowerOn newsletter, Apple is considering making its own TV.
There are no further details about this apart from the fact that the idea is back on Apple’s table. There is even a chance this TV might not happen, but given the recent developments in display technology, Apple might just go ahead with it.
The one thing that makes a TV great these days instantly is Quantum Dot. Apple has been avoiding it since it utilizes Cadmium, which is harmful to humans, especially when it comes to recycling it.
Now that Cadmium isn’t a requirement to create the quantum dot film, Apple has brought the technology to the MacBook Pro. With this switch, Apple is able to deliver far better color and motion performance on its notebook.
So, if anyone wants to make a great TV set, that Quantum Dot film is extremely important. And now that Apple is using it in its notebook, it makes sense that it can go ahead and make a TV out of it if needed.
Apple is currently using a mix of OLED, LCD, and Mini LED displays in its products, and if you want to deliver the best possible contrast ratio, OLED is the way to go. But in a living room environment where ambient light is usually bright, Mini LED is a far better choice.
Apple could make a Mini LED TV with a Quantum Dot layer on top of it for excellent colors and motion performance. Make the Apple TV running tvOS at its heart, and you have yourself the best-ever way of experiencing content, exactly the way Apple has intended.
Once Apple has complete control of the hardware and software, it can finally deliver experiences that aren’t possible right now. Ask any TV nerd and they’ll tell you how much time they spent calibrating colors and brightness for the best picture in the living room.
Apple can just fine-tune everything from the factory, and you can focus more on your content and not tinkering around with something else, exactly like an Apple monitor.
I really want this product to become a reality, and I don’t care how long it takes. At least this TV won’t ship with motion smoothing and other garbage filters turned on from the factory.
